What is cellulite?

Cellulite is a term that is used to describe fat deposits under the skin that outwardly give the skin a dimpled, or orange-peel like appearence.  The thighs, buttocks and the abdomen are the most common areas to develop cellulite. Cellulite is predetermined by genetics so even thin women can develop the appearance. Factors such as hormones, pregnancy, and aging may all attribute to the weakening of the collagen fibres to give the appearance  of cellulite.

Generally there are three main stages of cellulite

Stage 1 - Cellulite cannot be detected in this stage unless you pinch your skin in a special way.
Stage 2 - Cellulite can be seen when standing up. Skin may be discolored and have broken veins. There is an orange peel type of appearance to the skin, and skin may be thicker and more tender in these areas.
Stage 3 - cellulite has a cottage cheese type appearance and there are multiple visible lumps on the skin.

Causes of Cellulite

Several factors influence whether a person has cellulite and how much they have. Your genes, your gender, the amount of fat on your body, your age, and the thickness of your skin are all associated with the amount of cellulite you have or how visible it is. Several lifestyle factors can also cause cellulite. Among them is drinking alcohol, lack of exercise, smoking and diet. Aging is also an important factor. Due to the aging process, there is a decrease of the tone and thickness of the connective tissue in skin, making cellulite appear much more quickly in an older person.
Things to avoid

Caffeine
Too much caffeine may cause poor blood circulation and has negative impact on lymph flow, causing a build-up of toxins in your body. Try to limit your caffeine intake to no more than one cup of coffee or tea a day.

Sugar
Cutting down on sugars intake will definitely have positive impact on your overall weight management. High consumptions of sugar can slow down circulation of blood vessels and arteries.

Salt
Cutting down the amount of salt you consume will help with the appearence of cellulite as excess salt causes the body to retain water increasing the appearence of cellulite.

Alcohol
Avoid drinking alcohol if you have cellulite. Alcohol is a toxin that can increase fat levels in blood, slowing down circulation and adds additional burden onto the waste removal organs. The absorption of certain fat burners like Vitamin C, calcium and zinc can be reduced if too much of alcohol is consumed.

What should I eat to help reduce the appearence of cellulite?

Fresh fruit and vegetables contain fiber, vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals (eg. bioflavonoids and anti-ageing anthocyanidins). In particular fruit and vegetables  are good sources of the antioxidant vitamins A, C and E. Antioxidant-rich foods are also supposed to strengthen the skin's connective tissue; helpful because weak connective tissue permits the intrusion of fatty cells into the epidermis causing the familiar appearance of cellulite. Try starting the day by drinking a glass of hot water with a squeeze of lemon. This helps to detox your liver and revitalise the body. Drink plenty of water. Dehydration causes the appearance of cellulite to worsen.
